Dashboards overview

In SHIP-HATS, agencies have access to two types of dashboards:

  • GitLab-native dashboards (included with the GitLab Ultimate tier)
  • SHIP-HATS–provided dashboard.

These dashboards help monitor DevOps adoption, delivery performance, security posture, and operational efficiency.

Dashboard catalog

The following table lists the dashboards available for SHIP-HATS users and their primary purpose.

Dashboard Provided by What it’s used for
Runner Insights SHIP-HATS Monitor shared runner consumption, usage patterns, and capacity for GitLab Shared Runner users
Unified Quality Dashboard (UQD) SHIP-HATS Provides a single, unified view of system quality by consolidating metrics from multiple tools. Highlights key indicators like deployment frequency and supports metrics across process, code, system, and product quality to help teams make data-driven decisions.
DevOps Adoption GitLab Understand how projects are adopting CI/CD and DevOps practices
DORA Metrics GitLab Measure delivery performance using industry-standard DORA metrics
Security Dashboard GitLab Monitor application security findings and trends
Value Stream Analytics GitLab Identify workflow bottlenecks and improve development efficiency
Analytics Dashboard GitLab Review project activity and usage trends
Environments Dashboard GitLab Track deployments and environment health
Operations Dashboard GitLab Observe operational metrics and system health

Data scope and limitations

  • GitLab-native dashboards display data only from GitLab native tools. Data from tools such as SonarQube, Nexus IQ, Jira, or Confluence is not included.
  • Unified Quality Dashboard (UQD) consolidates data from multiple tools, including GitLab, Jira, SonarQube, and monitoring platforms. By default, access to UQD data is limited to systems belonging to the user’s agency.

Availability of SHIP-HATS dashboards

  • Runner Insights dashboard

    • SHIP-HATS currently provides the Runner Insights dashboard only for agencies and projects using shared runners.
    • Insights for agency-hosted runners are not available, as these runners are managed directly by the agencies.
  • Unified Quality Dashboard (UQD)

    • All public officers with SHIP-HATS access can view the Unified Quality Dashboard (UQD) for systems belonging to their agency.
    • Users do not have cross-agency visibility by default.
    • SHIP-HATS Subscription Admins (SAs), who manage the systems for their agency, may request custom access exceptions where there is a valid business need. Examples of valid use cases include granting UQD access to:
      • TIVOs or vendors sponsored by the agency
      • Staff from another agency working on a shared system
    • Access exceptions are currently managed by the SHIP-HATS team.

Dashboards by role

The following sections illustrate how dashboards are commonly used by different roles. A dashboard may appear under multiple roles depending on usage.

Developers

Developers typically use dashboards to support day-to-day development and troubleshooting:

Dashboard Provided by Typical use
Runner Insights SHIP-HATS Monitor shared runner consumption, usage patterns, and capacity for GitLab Shared Runner users
Unified Quality Dashboard (UQD) SHIP-HATS View specific metrics to shorten feedback loops and improve flow
Environments Dashboard GitLab Monitor deployments and environment status
Security Dashboard GitLab Identify and remediate vulnerabilities
Analytics Dashboard GitLab Review project activity and trends

Platform & Operations team

Platform and operations teams typically focus on stability, security, and operational readiness:

Dashboard Provided by Typical use
Unified Quality Dashboard (UQD) SHIP-HATS Monitor team progress, identify bottlenecks and remove blockers
Operations Dashboard GitLab Monitor operational metrics and signals
Environments Dashboard GitLab Track deployment health
Security Dashboard GitLab Monitor security findings at scale

Leads & Managers

Leads and managers typically use dashboards for visibility, measurement, and continuous improvement:

Dashboard Provided by Typical use
Unified Quality Dashboard (UQD) SHIP-HATS Track benchmark performance and long-term trends to support strategic planning and continuous improvement
DevOps Adoption GitLab Assess DevOps capability adoption
DORA Metrics GitLab Measure delivery performance and efficiency
Value Stream Analytics GitLab Identify workflow bottlenecks and improvement opportunities

Access dashboards

Regularly reviewing these dashboards helps teams identify issues early and optimise delivery pipelines.

Access steps differ depending on whether the dashboard is GitLab-native or provided by SHIP-HATS.

Access GitLab-native dashboards

GitLab-native dashboards provide insights into CI/CD adoption, delivery performance, and security trends. Ensure your user role has the necessary permissions to view GitLab-native dashboards. Agencies must configure dashboards according to GitLab documentation to display meaningful data.

  1. On Console, go to Products and select the required SHIP-HATS subscription.

  2. Go to Tools > GitLab and select the required SHIP-HATS Project.

  3. Click the required Group name or subgroup/project link from the Subgroups/Project list.

    • Use the expand/collapse (+) icon to view nested subgroups if needed.
    • Only up to 3 levels of subgroups/projects are displayed on Console. To view subgroups beyond three levels, go to SGTS GitLab.
  4. Use GitLab’s left navigation or the Search feature to locate dashboards.

  5. Select the required dashboard.
