Meta

Beta Feature: This node is currently in beta. Features and functionality may be subject to changes.

The Meta Node allows you to access and manage workflow execution metadata. It provides two operations: querying the current execution metadata (such as execution ID, identifier, and start timestamp) and updating the workflow execution identifier. This is useful for tracking, labelling, and correlating workflow executions with external systems or business references.

How Does It Work?

Setup Steps:

  1. Build your workflow using Graph Edit Mode (minimum setup: input node → meta node → output node, but you can add more nodes as needed)
  2. Click on the meta node settings to open its configuration
  3. Configure the following:
    • Operation: Select one of the available operations:
      • Query Meta — Retrieves the current workflow execution metadata without making changes
      • Update Identifier — Sets a new identifier for the workflow execution
    • Identifier (only for Update Identifier): Enter the new identifier value. You can use mustache templates to dynamically set the identifier (e.g. {{input.caseNumber}})

Output:

Both operations return a metadata object with the following fields:

{
  "output": {
    "workflowExecutionId": "exec-123",
    "identifier": "my-case-ref-001",
    "startTimestamp": "2025-01-15T10:00:00.000Z"
  }
}
Field Description
workflowExecutionId The unique ID of the current workflow execution
identifier The user-defined identifier for this execution
startTimestamp ISO 8601 timestamp of when the workflow execution began

Examples

Labelling an Execution with a Case Reference

You receive a form submission with a case number and want to tag the workflow execution with that reference for easy lookup in the monitoring dashboard.

Meta Node Setup:

  • Operation: Update Identifier
  • Identifier: {{input.caseNumber}}

Sample input:

{
  "input": {
    "caseNumber": "CASE-2025-0042",
    "applicantName": "John Doe"
  }
}

Output:

{
  "output": {
    "workflowExecutionId": "exec-abc-123",
    "identifier": "CASE-2025-0042",
    "startTimestamp": "2025-01-15T10:00:00.000Z"
  }
}

The workflow execution is now labelled with CASE-2025-0042, making it searchable and identifiable in execution logs.

Retrieving Execution Metadata for Logging

You want to include the workflow execution ID in an API call to an external system for audit trail purposes.

Meta Node Setup:

  • Operation: Query Meta

Output:

{
  "output": {
    "workflowExecutionId": "exec-def-456",
    "identifier": "existing-identifier",
    "startTimestamp": "2025-01-15T08:30:00.000Z"
  }
}

The execution metadata can then be passed to downstream nodes (e.g., an API Node) to include in external API requests.

When to Use It?

Use Meta Node when:

  • You want to tag a workflow execution with a business reference (e.g., case number, application ID) for easy identification in monitoring.
  • You need to retrieve the workflow execution ID to pass to external systems for correlation or audit purposes.
  • You want to query the execution start time for time-based logic in downstream nodes.
  • You need to update the execution identifier dynamically based on data received during the workflow.
