Annotation
The Annotation Node is a visual documentation tool that allows you to add notes, comments, and explanatory text directly onto your workflow and decision graphs. It helps you document complex logic, explain business rules, or leave notes for other team members—all without affecting the execution of your workflow or decision.
How Does It Work?
Setup Steps:
- Open the Graph Edit Mode in your workflow or decision editor
- Add an Annotation Node from the component panel
- Click directly on the annotation to start typing your note
- Select the annotation to show its toolbar, then pick a colour, duplicate it or delete it
- Resize the annotation by dragging its edges when selected
- Move the annotation by dragging the strip along its top edge
Key Characteristics:
- Non-executable: Annotation nodes are purely visual and do not participate in workflow or decision execution
- Non-connectable: Cannot be connected to other nodes via edges—they float independently on the canvas
- Stays in place: Clicking Format to tidy up the graph does not move annotations, and the rest of the graph keeps its position so your notes stay next to the nodes they describe. Edits made by the AI Assistant also leave your annotations where you put them
- Sits in the background: Annotations are drawn behind other nodes, so a note never hides or blocks a node. A selected annotation is brought to the front while you edit it
- Inline editing: Click directly on the annotation to edit the text; changes save automatically when you click away
- Read-only view: When the graph is not editable, you can still select and copy the annotation text
Output:
The Annotation Node has no output. It is completely filtered out during execution and does not affect the data flow or logic of your workflow or decision.
Configuration
The Annotation Node is configured directly on the canvas:
| Property | Description |
|---|---|
| Text | The annotation content (edit by clicking directly on the node) |
| Colour | Choose a colour from the toolbar. Annotations without a colour are shown in yellow |
| Size | Adjust by dragging the node edges when selected. The default size is 200 × 100 pixels |
| Position | Drag the strip along the top edge of the annotation to move it |
Annotation Toolbar
When you select an annotation in Graph Edit Mode, a toolbar appears above it with these actions:
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| Colour | Six colour swatches: Yellow, Blue, Green, Pink, Purple and Gray. Each has a matching dark-mode style |
| Duplicate | Creates a copy of the annotation, placed slightly below and to the right of the original |
| Delete | Removes the annotation from the graph |
Tip: Use colours to group related notes, for example yellow for general notes, pink for items that need review and green for sections that are done.
When to Use It?
Use Annotation Node when:
- You want to document complex workflow sections for future reference.
- You need to explain business logic or decision rules to other team members.
- You want to leave notes about why certain design choices were made.
- You need to mark areas for future improvement or review.
- You want to provide context for complex data transformations or integrations.
Annotation Node Limitations
- Annotation nodes cannot be attached to any node. When you click Format, the annotation stays where it is, even if the nodes it describes move
- Content is limited to plain text (no rich formatting)
- Colours are limited to the six presets in the toolbar
