Jira permission schemes
A permission scheme controls which actions users can perform in a Jira project.
It assigns project permissions (such as creating issues, editing issues, or managing sprints) to project roles, users, or groups.
Each Jira project is associated with a permission scheme that determines the permissions available to users in that project.
Permission schemes allow administrators to manage permissions consistently across projects by assigning permissions to roles or groups, rather than configuring permissions individually for each user.
How permission schemes work
A permission scheme connects permission capabilities to project roles, groups, or users.
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
| Permission capability | An action that can be performed in the project (for example, creating issues or editing issues) |
| Project role | A group of users with similar responsibilities (for example, Administrator or Developer) |
| Permission scheme | The configuration that assigns permissions to roles, users, or groups |
When a permission scheme is applied to a project, users receive permissions through their assigned project roles or group memberships.
For example:
- If a permission scheme grants Create Issues to the Developer role, all users assigned to the Developer role can create issues.
- If the scheme grants Browse Projects to a user group, all members of that group can view the project.
The exact permissions available to users depend on the permission scheme applied to the project.
For an example of how permissions may be assigned to roles, see Jira roles and project permissions.
