Use other AI coding tools

SHIP-HATS recommends using Available AI coding tools, as these tools already include the required security guardrails and policy controls.

We strongly encourage GovTech officers and their augmented resources to use the AI coding tools approved by GovTech, regardless of the project’s classification. If you choose to use AI coding tools not cleared by GovTech:

  • You may use them only for OFFICIAL (OPEN) or OFFICIAL (CLOSED) code.
  • You must self-sponsor the usage (no reimbursement claims).

Note: Claude Code itself is only the interface. The classification level is determined by the holistic ecosystem of a secured interface, models, policies, and guardrails. For example, the GovTech-provisioned setup connects through PlatformAI to models hosted on Bedrock, with the monitoring and Zero Data Retention (ZDR) controls required for RESTRICTED / Sensitive-Normal use. A personal Claude Code subscription connects to a different, commercial model pool that does not have ZDR, may be used for training, and retains logs outside Singapore, and therefore does not meet the bar for classified work.

Request evaluation of a new tool

If you want to try a new AI coding tool, let us know when signing up or in the SHIP-HATS AI Coding Assistants Telegram channel.

If you are a GovTech officer, you can also raise it in the Slack channel #engineering.

We will assess the feasibility and integration of the tool.

Purchase and use your own AI coding tool

If you need an AI coding tool that is not offered by SHIP-HATS, you may purchase and use it independently.

However, you must:

  • implement your own security guardrails
  • obtain the required security and compliance clearances

If the tool will be used with code classified as RESTRICTED or above, complete the policy clearance process before using the tool. See Requirements for AI tool clearance.
