A Singapore Government Agency Website

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section. Here you will find answers to the most common questions about Mirage’s services, features and access.

How do I access Mirage?

Mirage is available to Whole-Of-Government (WOG) users, who can log in at mirage.gov.sg using WOG-AD or TechPass.

Mirage is also available to select non-WOG users, including public healthcare institutions and non-government data contributors. If your organisation has already been approved for Mirage use, you can register for an account at mirage.gov.sg.

If you are a non-approved non-WOG user or are unable to register, please contact Mirage support at go.gov.sg/mirage-support to request access.

-> Registration Guide

How do I register for Mirage?

If you have a WOG-AD or TechPass account, you can log in directly at mirage.gov.sg without further registration.

If you do not have either account, register through the Mirage registration page. You will need to provide your work email, name, mobile number, organisation, team, role, and a brief description of your use case. You will be onboarded to TechPass, which provides the login credentials for Mirage.

Public sector users are typically onboarded within a few hours. Non-government entity users require case-by-case approval, which takes 1-2 business days.

-> Registration Guide

Why can’t I log in even though my organisation is eligible to use Mirage?

First confirm that you are using the appropriate sign-in method (WOG-AD or TechPass). If you registered via TechPass, ensure that onboarding is complete and you received your credentials via email and SMS. If login still fails, provide your organisation, email domain, sign-in method and the error shown. The domain may need to be checked or whitelisted.

Who is eligible to use Mirage?

Mirage primarily serves Singapore public-sector users. It is also available to selected non-government users on a case-by-case basis, including public healthcare institutions and non-government entities participating in collaboration with an agency. If you or your organisation is not currently approved, you may raise a support ticket describing your use case.

What information do I need to provide when requesting access?

Provide your organisation and contact, intended use case (mock or synthetic data generation), operating environment, data classification (if using SDG), and a brief description of why you need the service.

How long does it take to get started with Mirage?

For WOG users with an existing WOG-AD or TechPass account, there is no onboarding time — log in and start using Mirage immediately.

For users requiring TechPass registration, public sector users are typically onboarded within a few hours. Non-government entity users may take 1-2 business days for approval.

Can I get a demo of Mirage?

See our video demo for a walkthrough of the platform’s capabilities.

Is an API available for Mirage?

API access is not currently available for Mirage. If you have a use case that requires API integration, please raise a support ticket at go.gov.sg/mirage-support to let us know. We assess demand to inform our future roadmap.

Can Mirage be used with Sensitive-High or other highly sensitive data?

For Government data, Mirage has met IM8 requirements around Application Development Security and Risk Management for use of Government data classified up to Confidential Cloud-Eligible (CCE), Sensitive-High (SH). Key risk mitigation measures include:

  • Mirage does not retain data. Raw data is purged upon completion of data generation.
  • All data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • Monthly review of privileged accounts.
  • Quarterly Vulnerability Assessment scan and Yearly Penetration Testing.

This is a non-comprehensive summary. Users are welcome to contact the team for more details or issues not covered here.

Synthetic data generation requires uploading real data for model training. Mock data generation does not require any input data and therefore does not pose a data classification concern.

The data owner remains responsible for use-case approval and residual-risk acceptance.

Does using Mirage mean the synthetic output is automatically safe to share or down-classified?

No. While synthetic data is generated from statistical patterns rather than copied directly, the data owner must assess the output for residual privacy risk using the privacy report. Classification and sharing approval must be reassessed separately based on the output and its intended use.

-> Is Synthetic Data Safe?

Can I use Mirage-generated data before sending it to GenAI, an external vendor or another party?

Yes, generating mock or synthetic data as a substitute for real data is a common use pattern. However, confirm the downstream classification requirements and sharing authority. For synthetic data, review the privacy report to assess residual risk before sharing the output.

Mirage is currently free for all approved users. Pricing for cost recovery may be introduced in future financial years, in line with standard GovTech product policy. For FY26, there is no charge.

If you have questions about future pricing, please raise a support ticket at go.gov.sg/mirage-support.

How do I know if my dataset size is appropriate for synthetic data generation?

Synthetic data generation requires sufficient input data to train the model. Here is a summary of data size categories:

Category Criteria Recommendation
Insufficient < 20 rows Add more data — not usable yet
Small 20–1000 rows, or row:column ratio < 50:1 Generation is possible but quality may be limited
Ideal Row:column ratio > 200:1 Optimal quality and representativeness
Excess > 1M rows, > 500 MB, or > 50 columns Reduce dataset size

If your dataset is small, you can improve the row-to-column ratio by increasing the number of rows or reducing the number of columns (e.g. dropping columns not needed for pattern learning, or removing columns derivable from others).

-> Step 1: Upload Dataset — Data size

How should I clean my dataset before uploading to Mirage?

There are two main data quality issues to handle before uploading:

1. Missing values

Leave missing values as blank cells. Do not fill them with placeholder strings like "NA" or "missing", as this causes issues:

  • Numerical columns with "NA" strings will be treated as categorical, preventing value interpolation.
  • Categorical columns with "NA" strings will treat "NA" as an additional class instead of a random missing value.

Blank missing values can be handled properly in the Prepare Dataset step.

2. Data format consistency

  • Categorical: Use consistent spelling and capitalisation across categories (e.g. "Active" and "active" are treated as different values).
  • Numerical: Use full stops for decimals (1.50, not 1,50) and no separators for large numbers (10000, not 10,000).
  • Datetime: Use a single consistent format throughout the column (e.g. all entries as YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS).

-> Data Cleaning

How can I stop Mirage from dropping Personally Identifiable Information (PII) columns?

Mirage automatically drops columns whose names are identified as PII.

If you still need a similar column in your output, convert it to an identifier column and select the Transform technique. This lets Mirage generate new values that follow the format you need, instead of synthesizing the original PII values directly.

-> Step 2: Prepare Dataset — Dropped columns | Step 2: Transform

I’m having issues uploading or downloading files.

Upload and download issues can be caused by device type, browser, network configuration, or file format. Please raise a support ticket at go.gov.sg/mirage-support with:

  • What device you are using (e.g. GSIB, SIS, GFE, personal)
  • Your browser (e.g. Chrome, Edge)
  • Your Job ID (if applicable)
  • A screenshot of the error or unexpected behaviour

The team will investigate and advise on next steps.

What is an NGE and does this apply to me?

Non-Government Entities (NGEs) are entities not covered under the Public Sector Governance Act and therefore not subject to IM8 Data. This includes MOHH entities and universities (e.g. NUS, NTU, SMU).

NGEs may be subject to other regulations that Mirage is not actively designed to fulfil. It is the NGE’s responsibility to assess Mirage’s suitability for their use case and applicable requirements.

What considerations should NGE users make before using Mirage?

It is the user’s responsibility to assess whether using Mirage complies with all applicable data laws, regulations, rules and guidelines. Key considerations:

  1. For synthetic data generation: is it safe to pass your data to Mirage for model training? Assess whether your data falls within Mirage’s supported classification threshold.
  2. Is the generated output sufficiently realistic and safe for your intended purpose? Run a trial and assess the quality and privacy reports.

Mock data generation does not require any input data and therefore does not pose a data-transfer concern.

Do NGE users need to sign an agreement to use Mirage?

Users do not sign a separate agreement or contract. All users are legally bound by Mirage’s Terms of Use.

NGE users are additionally required to have agreed with the Mirage team on the purpose of use prior to access. This can be achieved through email or the Mirage registration flow.

How do NGE users access Mirage?

  1. Contact the Mirage team to confirm purpose of use and obtain pre-approval. MOHH entities may not need this step.
  2. Register for an account using your institution email at mirage.gov.sg. You will be onboarded to TechPass, which provides your login credentials.
  3. Log in using your TechPass credentials.

Approval for non-government entity users typically takes 1-2 business days.

What happens in the event of a data incident?

Refer to Mirage’s Terms of Use for information on GovTech’s liabilities. Mirage adheres to IM8 Incident Management requirements and the GovTech Incident Management Plan. Users with further questions are welcome to contact the Mirage team.
