GitLab access requirements
This topic explains the access requirements for GitLab repositories and how licences, membership, and roles affect repository access.
Access requirements
To access WOG repositories, users need all of the following:
- An active TechPass to sign in to GitLab.
- A GitLab licence via SHIP-HATS subscription.
- Group or project membership. This grants access to specific repositories.
- An appropriate GitLab role. This determines what the user can do within those repositories.
Exception:
InnerSource repositories use a different access model. See GitLab access scenarios to understand how TechPass, GitLab licences, and Open Data Access affect access to WOG and InnerSource repositories.

The following table compares the access requirements for WOG repositories and InnerSource repositories.

Remove or change access
The following actions affect repository access differently:
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Remove a user’s GitLab licence | Removes access to repositories that require a GitLab licence. See GitLab access scenarios to understand what access remains, including InnerSource access as a Guest and Open Data Access, where applicable. |
| Remove user from a group or project membership | Removes access only to the corresponding GitLab group or project. It does not affect access to any other repositories. |
| Change user’s GitLab role | Changes what users can do within the repositories they can access. For example, permissions may change from viewing only to contributing. |
Open Data Access (GovTech subscriptions only)
For GovTech-owned SHIP-HATS subscriptions, repositories may be accessible to eligible GovTech users through Open Data Access.
